Samoan representative for the Beijing Olympics trains in Hong Kong

Samoa’s hope for a gold medal in light heavy weight boxing has landed in Hong Kong to train with Andrew Wong Kee at JAB mixed martial arts studio ahead of the Beijing Olympics.

Farani Tavu’i (22), gold medallist at the Oceania Games in 2007 and 2008 as well as gold medallist at this year’s Pacific Games, will undergo an extensive training regime of strength and power training, high anaerobic circuits and countless boxing skill orientated drills in order to keep his weight at 81kg over the next month and a half.

As well as training and sparring with Andrew Wong Kee, an ex amateur boxer and professional rugby player, Tavu’i will also spar against Mathew Corbett (22), the currently ranked 13th in world amateur light heavy weight championship and Commonwealth gold medallist at the last Games. Flying in from Australia, Corbett will be training at the gym for one month and hopes to gain invaluable experience from training with the Olympian and the rest of the team at JAB.

Andrew Wong Kee, director at JAB, said: “I’m really pleased to have Farani come over to train with us. I expect to see him go far in his category at Beijing. We are certainly going to put him through his paces and having Mathew here will prove the perfect sparring partner for him.”

Farani Tavu’i said: “JAB is the perfect place for me to train. I wanted to get out of my usual training environment and challenge myself as well as be relatively close proximity to Beijing. When the opportunity came for me to train in Hong Kong I did not hesitate to say yes. The training programme is good and I am enjoying sparring with Mathew.”

Although it is not possible for members of the gym to spar with Tavu’i, Corbett will be holding seminars that are open to the public.
