“Suitable for all ages, genders and fitness levels, Ginastica Natural is the perfect complement to any training programme, and we are sure it will be hugely successful within both the martial arts community and the general public with the wide array of benefits it provides”. Andrew Wong Kee, JAB and TEAM GRIPS Managing Director.
Developed by Alvaro Romano, an original student of Rolls Gracie (one of the pioneers of BJJ), Ginastica Natural retains some concepts and fundamentals from centuries past, based on the natural movements of primitive man and activities performed in nature. In constant motion and with several combinations of different moves, Ginastica Natural combines Jiu-Jitsu ground movement, strength exercises using the body's own weight, and dynamic stretching and breathing techniques. There are hundreds of movements, making this a complete body of work that develops physical qualities including strength, flexibility, balance and coordination, and through breathing techniques, provides the practitioner with cardiovascular conditioning and great progress in mental and motor control.
Ginastica Natural classes and private tuition are given by Douglas Pieterse, a multiple gold medal winning gymnast, martial artist and stuntman from South Africa, with a blue belt in Aiki-Jitsu and a purple belt in Aikido.

He has trained with the much respected Gracie family and currently holds a 2nd Dan black belt. Silvio has also been invited to teach countless law enforcement officers, military and government officials from the FBI, Secret Service and also the Soul Soliz Academy, home of UFC former champion Tito Ortiz. HEDGE FUND FIGHT NITE: WHO MAKES THE CUT
Event team visit the mission that last year’s event funded
As the contenders for Hedge Fund Fight Nite whittle down from 35 volunteers from the finance community to 21 potential fighters, Ironmonger Events, the organizers of the event visit an Operation Smile mission to see how the money is spent.
Rob Derry, managing director of Ironmonger Events and Mandy D’Abo, an ambassador for Operation Smile in Hong Kong visited Urumqi a city in North West China to see how the equivalent funds raised from last year’s event, which was over HK$1million, treats children and adults with facial disfigurements.
Over five days the mission treated 97 people aged from six months to 51 years old. People came from far and wide to get treated by Operation Smile volunteer doctors, with the furthest person traveling over 500km through the desert to reach the hospital. Operations from cleft palate to hare lips were performed back to back over four days
One seven year old girl called Sanati traveled with her grandfather for 24 hours on a horse and then 13 hours on a bus just to get to the hospital. They live in the far north of Xinjiang in the mountains near the Kazakhstan border. Sanati’s success story will be broadcasted on Hedge Fund Fight Nite to demonstrate to guests how they are contributing to this worthwhile charity.
The money raised from Hedge Fund Fight Nite goes to raise money for missions like Urumqi which covers the doctors’ accommodation and travel expenses as well as the medical equipment that can perform these life changing but simple operations.
The six minute heroes, that could brave the ring in front of nearly a 1,000 of their peers at a black tie event on October 30, 2008 for three, two minute rounds of boxing include:
Alex Bellingham – The Henley Group
James Carss – Hudson
Hugh Driver – Macquarie
Josh Green – Guggenheim Partners
Neil Hutchinson – HSBC
Avtar Johal – Macquarie
Nick Lambe – Morgan McKinley
Richard Le Gallez – HSBC
Nick Lumb – The Henley Group
James McCaughey – Macquarie
Graham McNeill – EC Harris
Frank Packard-Reed – HBK Capital Management
Elliot Odell – ICAP
Stephen Pengelly – Control Risks
Adam Smith – Macquarie
Thomas Taw – Instinet Pacific Ltd
Chris Trent – Macquarie
Nissim Tse – RAB Capital
Adam Upton – JF Asset Management
John Wixley – Standard Bank
Ben Worthington –Zurich International
Rob Derry, managing director at Ironmonger Events said: “It was inspiring to go on the mission and see how the money from the event is spent. The operations are such intricate procedures and transform these peoples’ lives dramatically. To see a child smile properly for the first time is a truly incredible experience.
“Working with JAB gym we have reached the first stage of the elimination process and cut the fighters from 35 to 21 guys. We are very grateful for all the time and effort these guys put in. At the end of this month we will then lose another five volunteers. We will then announce the confirmed list of fighters the week before the main event at the “Weigh In”.
Tables for the Hedge Fund Fight Nite are still available and range from HK$20,000 for a Standard table, HK$35,000 for a Silver table and HK$60,000 for a ringside table. For more information please log on to www.ironmongerevents.com or call 2973 0372.

As well as training and sparring with Andrew Wong Kee, an ex amateur boxer and professional rugby player, Tavu’i will also spar against Mathew Corbett (22), the currently ranked 13th in world amateur light heavy weight championship and Commonwealth gold medallist at the last Games. Andrew Wong Kee, director at JAB, said: “I’m really pleased to have Farani come over to train with us. I expect to see him go far in his category at Beijing. We are certainly going to put him through his paces and having Mathew here will prove the perfect sparring partner for him.”
Farani Tavu’i said: “JAB is the perfect place for me to train. I wanted to get out of my usual training environment and challenge myself as well as be relatively close proximity to Beijing. When the opportunity came for me to train in Hong Kong I did not hesitate to say yes. The training programme is good and I am enjoying sparring with Mathew.”
Although it is not possible for members of the gym to spar with Tavu’i, Corbett will be holding seminars that are open to the public.
